The Teacher Becomes You

I’m not sure how it happened. You know how it goes, don’t you? When something sneaks up on you and boom, takes over your life, your being, your heart and your soul. That’s sort of how it was for me. One day, I was just me. Next thing I knew, I was someone who was beyond myself and out into the world.

Because that’s what a teacher does. They give a part of themselves to the world. Every time they get into the classroom, they leave something of themselves behind (and, kid yourself not, they take something with them — and many times, I feel I learn more than I teach — for teaching is also learning), they leave a little bit of knowledge to a world of so many unknowns.

They leave words, sentence, numbers, strategies, laughs. Being the daughter of professors, I could never have imagined teaching was passed through the blood. I could never have imagined, as I struggled through Law School and Philosophy, that the teaching fever coursed through my veins. But it doesn’t make me ill, it makes me alive.

Sometimes, as I look at my students, who often remind me so much of myself, and I wonder what I would have done then, if a beloved teacher had told me: “That’s who you’re going to be.” (I’d probably have said, “You’re out of your mind!”)  But I was the one who was out of my mind, then.

But I seem to have found my way. Or rather, my way seems to have found me. Because one thing I’ve always heard about teachers is that you don’t become a teacher. The teacher becomes you. And, boy, once it does, there’s no turning back.

  1. I bet you make an awesome teacher! I love a great teacher — the ones I had, the ones my kids have had. You really can’t imagine the impact you’re having on entire lives. Good for you – it’s a noble and wonderful calling. (Glad you’re blogging again!) xo

    • Aww, thank you! I think what drove me the most to become a teacher was the amazing teachers/professors I’ve had and how much they’ve influenced my life. I guess I figured if I could have that sort of impact on someone’s life, it would all be worth it, huh?

Thank you for commenting, Rock! 🙂

    Wow! That was amazing! =)

    • Thank you so much. It means a lot coming from you, who’s someone I look up to as a coworker! 🙂

      • Veronica

Barbie, you rock! You’re so intelligent, bright and enthusiastic, besides being so young! I’m sure you’ll go far and you’ll be really successful, whatever you decide to do. But I agree with you. Being a teacher is in your blood and heart.

        • Thank you SO MUCH! Truly! I hope I can be successful at whatever I decide to do. Mostly, I want to be happy. If I manage to get that much, I think I can survive the tough world that it is 🙂

  3. Being the daughter and granddaughter of teachers, I think the gene might have skipped a generation. Last Friday was a field trip to the zoo. Myself and another parent herded 6 girls through. Being that my kids go to a private school, I was wearing my “school garb” and I think some other parents that were there thought I was a teacher, because every time I pointed something out to the kids from our school, it seemed like 6 other moms were hanging on my words. Couldn’t. Wait. To. Leave. But, if teaching is your passion, and you truly enjoy interacting with students, the those are the best kinds of teachers. Teachers are born, not made. Enjoy your journey.

    • You know, I think that just because you don’t particularly like being around kids it doesn’t mean you couldn’t be a teacher. Some people were born to teach teenagers (I ADORE THEM — crazy, I know, many of my co-workers ask for anything but teenagers!) or adults! My mom would never teach kids. I’m not nearly as fond of adults. Haha. You never know 😉

  4. Awwwww! Barbie! Nothing could make me happier than to knw you’ve found your way!! It’s the best you can hope for someone! Always glad to see you touch base…this is ESPECIALLY good news ! ❤

    • Thank you, Laurie!! I keep trying. And trying. I’m not the most decisive person ever, so, I’m just happy to have found something I like doing, too. I still want to write, though. It’s my greatest passion. Nothing says I can’t do both, though! 😀
